Building Stone – Source Matching

A geologist is carrying out a microscopic examination of a building stone sample. A microscope linked to a PC displays a thin section image on the monitor. The geologist is looking at a polished thin section in his hand.

Sandberg offers a building stone source matching service where, based on microscopic examination and comparison against archived petrographic data, our experienced geologists can suggest potential stone-matching sources for restoration works.

Detailed building stone matching identification and assessment can assist in the compatible repair and ongoing aesthetic and technical performance of stone in building facades and floors, bridges, viaducts and monuments.

The stone matching of a potential source with that in a historic structure depends upon various other factors, such as weathering, permeability, strength and workability. All of these factors must be carefully considered in planning stone-matching remedial works.

Quarry Assessment

Our geologists can assist with quarry source assessments to evaluate current production and advise on selection and production control. If required, comprehensive testing can be provided in our in-house UKAS-accredited testing laboratories.

Condition Surveys

Sandberg can also assist with condition surveys (including roped access), inspection (including non-destructive techniques such as GPR) and specialist deterioration investigations (using in-house Scanning Electron Microscopy & microanalysis and X-ray Diffraction).
