Our Geology Department is responsible for the identification of stone types via petrographical examination of samples. Optical microscopes and the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) are also instrumental for the observation of the effects of decay on the material. The identification of the stone and microscopic observations are critical in order to understand the decay mechanisms.
Our geologists also assist in identifying quarries for the like-to-like replacement of stone or for the selection of similar stones, should the original stone not be available anymore.
Other types of tests and analysis, such as water absorption and flexural and compressive strength tests, are available in our laboratories to determine the physical properties of the stone and assist in identifying the most suitable repair materials. We can also assess the effects and effectiveness of cleaning techniques and treatments applied to the stone.
