Materials for Coastal Engineering

Stone for coastal engineering
Alkali silica reaction to concrete coastal protection blocks.

The aggressive environment of a coastline is a powerful test of the man-made structures used in coastal engineering. The success of these structures is greatly dependent upon the selection and use of suitable materials which are able to withstand the hostile conditions they will encounter.

The material most commonly used in sea-defences is rock, which exhibits a wide range of variability in both engineering characteristics and appearance. Selection of the correct type of rock from the right source is vital to the construction of an effective, durable and cost-effective sea-defence structure. The wrong choice may lead to an expensive, ineffectual and unsound structure with high maintenance costs. Sandberg works with materials suppliers, designers, constructors and owners of coastal defences to get the materials right.

An initial quarry appraisal by one of our experienced geologists or geomaterials engineers will provide independent advice on the quality, quantity and variability of available material and on production techniques. Our UKAS accredited laboratories offer a full suite of tests to National and International Standards to evaluate stone suitability and compliance with specification. Our independent production control service can ensure the continuing supply of quality material, minimising costly and wasteful rejection.
