Condensation Risk Analysis

We assist architects and designers in verifying the potential risk of surface and interstitial condensation of curtain wall and fenestration systems, cladding systems and modern and traditional wall constructions by using 1D and 2D hygrothermal modelling.

Condensation is one of the few visual indicators of poor performance. If it occurs regularly, it may cause mould growth, which is a potential health hazard. Regular condensation and condensation inside the building envelope (interstitial condensation) can also damage materials and possibly corrosion structural elements.

At Sandberg, we investigate condensation holistically by:

  • Reviewing original design and specifications
  • Opening up to confirm construction details and potential defects
  • Assessing properties of existing materials
  • Monitoring the environmental conditions with temperature and relative humidity sensors
  • Carrying out hygrothermal modelling with software applications such as Therm, Mould, Wufi and BuildDesk

Sandberg can also advise on the effectiveness of proposed remediation works by modelling the new design.

In historic buildings, we assess the effectiveness of proposed thermal improvements and verify that these do not have any detrimental impact on the historic fabric.

Condensation risk and mould growth are assessed in accordance with current British Standards, CWCT and BRE guidelines and other relevant industry recommendations.
