Bomb Calorimetry Testing for Cladding Materials

Sandberg provides specialist bomb calorimetry testing to determine the Gross Heat of Combustion and calorific value of building cladding materials. Using our Parr 6100 bomb calorimeter, we deliver precise measurements in accordance with EN ISO 1716:2018, supporting fire safety assessments and helping inform Euroclass ratings.

What is Bomb Calorimetry?

Bomb calorimetry is a laboratory method used to measure the Gross Heat of Combustion and calorific value of a material – the total energy released when it burns. These measurements provide essential information about material combustibility, allowing architects, engineers, and regulators to accurately assess potential fire risks.

Why Gross Heat of Combustion and Calorific Value Matter

Both the Gross Heat of Combustion and calorific value directly impact how a material contributes to fire spread and intensity. Materials with higher values can significantly increase fire risks if not properly assessed. Accurate bomb calorimetry results provide critical data for safe material selection, regulatory compliance, and as part of the Euroclass classification process.

It is important to note that further testing may be required to obtain a complete Euroclass rating, as bomb calorimetry forms one key element of the overall reaction-to-fire assessment.

Materials We Test

We test a wide range of cladding and façade materials, including:

  • Aluminum Composite Materials (ACM)
  • Fibre Cement Boards
  • Cement Particle Boards (CPB)
  • Other Façade Materials

Our testing ensures that the fire performance of these materials is fully understood before specification or installation.

Testing Standards

All testing follows EN ISO 1716:2018, ensuring accurate measurement of the Gross Heat of Combustion and reliable assessment of cladding material fire performance.

Euroclass Rating and Regulatory Compliance

Bomb calorimetry testing is a key component of the Euroclass reaction-to-fire system, helping to evaluate the combustibility of cladding materials. By determining both the Gross Heat of Combustion and calorific value, our testing provides essential information that contributes to Euroclass assessment.

However, a full Euroclass rating may require additional testing, depending on the material type and regulatory requirements. Our team can advise on the complete testing program needed to support certification and compliance.

By assessing both the Gross Heat of Combustion and calorific value, we help clients make informed decisions that reduce the potential for fire hazards.
