Tensile Testing of Metals

Metal specimen after tensile test

Sandberg carries out a wide range of tensile tests on a variety of materials and components. These tests are carried out by our experienced technical staff in our UKAS accredited laboratory. Testing ranges from removing specimens from sections of material to determine their mechanical properties to the testing of components such as bolts and reinforcing bar.

Range of tensile tests:

  • UKAS accredited for ISO 6892
  • Three test machines – combined load range 0.1kN to 1000kN
  • Structural steel
  • Wrought iron
  • Cast iron
  • Aluminium
  • Steel reinforcement including welded connections
  • Any other metallic materials
  • Bolts, studs and fixings
  • HSFG bolt slip factor
  • Product testing

Testing may be used to determine basic properties, such as yield or proof stress and ultimate tensile strength plus elongation. Alternatively, it may be used to confirm proof load and ultimate load capacity of a component such as a bolt weld.

Sandberg use three tensometers with ranges from 0-20kN, 0-600kN and 0 to 1000kN which enable testing on samples with gauge diameters from a few millimetres up to 40mm.

Standard metallic tensile tests at ambient temperature are carried out under our UKAS accreditation.

Some of the common reasons for tensile testing are to determine the properties of an existing material in order to re-evaluate its performance for proposed new design calculations and after exposure to fire.

We also conduct tensile tests as a control of material quality from a manufacturer or supplier.
