Rom joined Sandberg in 1981, initially working in Civil Engineering site laboratories before joining the Cladding Inspection Department based in Clapham, London. Working within the quality assessment and testing materials environment, he has gained a broad knowledge of civil engineering materials, testing, inspection and investigation techniques. He also has considerable experience working overseas, particularly in the Middle East.
In 2000 he was appointed Manager of the Building Inspection Department, overseeing structural and civil engineering inspections and investigations and preparation of reports for major site investigation projects.
Over the years, Rom developed an interest in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and is on a mission to promote and expand the use of GPR as a non-destructive technique to explore the sub-surface, particularly in the Civil Engineering and Construction Industry. In 2001 he founded the Sandberg GPR department, which he managed for 16 years. He enjoys pushing the boundaries of GPR and finding new methods and survey techniques.
His GPR specialisms include:
- Concrete imaging and rebar mapping
- Concrete floor slab surveys
- NDT building investigation
- Utility surveys
- Chimney flue location
- Void detection and underground tank location
In 2017 Rom moved to Spain and now works as a GPR Consultant.
Rom also designs websites and enjoys the challenge of SEO. He designed and maintains the Sandberg (this) website, as well as groundpenetratingradar.co.uk.
In his spare time, he enjoys film photography and exploring Spain, in particular wine, tapas and hill walking in Andalucía.
