Julian has over 45 years of experience in quality assurance, inspection and testing, covering steelwork for the civil, structural and offshore industries.
Employed by Sandberg since 1975 to advise, inspect, test, monitor and audit fabrication, protective treatment, installation and erection functions for a variety of projects on behalf of the Engineer, contractor or client. A considerable practical knowledge base with sound theoretical education. Worldwide experience gained during several years overseas in the Far East, Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Julian has a wide knowledge of the materials, welding, non-destructive testing and protective treatment associated with the construction industry, extensive experience of bridge and building specifications in the UK and the associated European and ISO standards.
He is involved with issues concerning the use of steelwork in the industry through participation with various boards and committees, the publication of articles, giving talks/lectures at events/seminars and involvement in the drafting of national standards and specifications.
Julian provided assistance with the National Structural Steelwork Specification, 5th Edition, and indirectly with BS EN 1090-2. He now sits on the Steering Committee of the National Structural Steelwork Specification, 7th Edition. Julian sits on the BSI committee QS1-4 for ISO 99001, Quality in Construction.
Julian is a past chairman of the TWICL Specialist and Practitioners Management Committee (most CSWIP certification) and past chairman and vice chairman of the TWICL Welding Fabricator Certification Scheme. Currently, he is chairman of the TWI Technical Group 1 – Structure and Infrastructure.
He was awarded the TWI’s Distinguished Service Award in 2014.
