Contemporary building construction employs both traditional materials in modern ways and modern materials in traditional ways. Sandberg offers expert services in these 'ancient and modern' materials, including toughened glass which is currently popular for atria and curtain walling, plastics in their various forms, the use of which is increasing rapidly and, of course, paints.
There has been a tremendous resurgence in the use of traditional materials and many training courses have been set up to reintroduce lost skills. Having worked with English Heritage, the National Trust and other bodies over many years, Sandberg has wide experience of the selection of repair materials, identification of the original material's composition using chemical, petrographic and visual techniques.
Architects, restoration experts and conservators involved in the repair or replacement of eroded parts of historic buildings frequently require to know the make-up of old or even ancient mortars, renders and plasters - without recourse to the costly techniques used by some researchers and archaeologists. Over many years Sandberg have developed an acknowledged reputation in this specialised area and hold a Commission from English Heritage for this work.
