William is a Chartered Engineer with a variety of experience in mechanical and materials engineering. He thrives on the variety of his job, which frequently takes him between laboratory, factory, construction and industrial test site environments. He has worked on a diverse range of projects, including:
- Failure investigation and forensic material analysis
- Construction/Building envelope consultancy
- Façade and glazing tests
- Development of composite materials
- Optimisation of injection moulding processes
- Design of nuclear support facilities
William has a PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Exeter, where he worked on cutting-edge industrial projects as a Research Fellow. His particular expertise is in testing and analysis of materials (particularly polymers and composites), but he also has an appetite for problem solving challenges; he enjoys devising novel solutions to unusual problems!
For example, he has designed bespoke load test apparatus for a Grade 1 listed staircase, written software to analyse large datasets from an array of moisture sensors and built a customised brake dynamometer machine.
Away from work, William is a keen advocate for the Engineering profession and he endeavours to inspire young people to consider it as a career choice. To this end, he organises a variety of science communication events through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and with the support of Sandberg.
