Concrete Floor Slab Surveys using GPR

Modern concrete floor slabs can be subjected to extremely tough conditions including heavy static and moving loads, impact and abrasion . Warehouse floors in particular can suffer badly. Problems with concrete floors can also arise when a change of use occurs and loads differ from the original design. Failure of the concrete floor slab may occur, resulting in costly down time and expensive repairs.

Cracking and deterioration of floor slabs can be common in warehouses.   Ground penetrating radar provides a cross-section view through concrete floor slabs. In this example reinforcement varies from none to two layers. The underside of the slab can also be clearly seen.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) offers a very cost effective way of assessing concrete floor slabs. Where as built records are not available GPR can be used to determine the floor slab construction. Where problems have already occurred, GPR can be an extremely useful technique in identifying defects in construction and possible causes for the failure. Being non-intrusive, silent and with no harmful emissions, large areas of concrete floor slab can be surveyed with minimal inconvenience to the occupants.

Ground Penetrating Radar can be used to determine:

  • Floor slab construction detail
  • Reinforcement distribution (number of layers (if present), spacing, variation, etc)
  • Floor slab thickness and variation
  • Voiding under the floor slab

Sandberg also offer comprehensive laboratory concrete and metallurgical testing, as well as consultancy services. Sandberg offer a true "one stop shop" for all concrete floor slab troubleshooting surveys.
