Industry
Industrial buildings incur their own special group of problems, some emanating from the manufacturing process being undertaken, which may use chemicals or yield products severely harmful to structures. Safety inspections have uncovered deterioration ranging from corroded roof supports down to disintegrating concrete piles. During design and construction, durability has not always been given adequate consideration, and many industrial buildings are built rapidly on a low budget. In the Middle East and in parts of the old Soviet Block, Sandberg has advised on structures suffering very rapid deterioration consequent of insufficient allowance for harsh natural environments, whilst in the UK use of ever lighter weight construction techniques has eroded the security obtained through traditional over-design. Consultation and supervision could have prevented many of those costly failures. Our firm has also been involved in specifying materials or material treatments for specialist applications to enhance the design and provide improved performance.
