On-site material identification
Sandberg offer chemical analysis capabilities with the use of Positive Materials Identification (PMI) from Oxford Instruments. The PMI Master Pro uses Optical Emissions Spectroscopy (OES) to identify the chemical composition of Metals.
This portable OES uses precision technology to provide highly accurate results, with a specialist UV Pro gun for the analysis of lighter elements such as Sulphur and Phosphorous. The PMI with the UV Pro gun is ideal for determining the carbon equivalency value (CEV) of steels, which is a key factor in determining a materials suitability for welding.
The PMI is ideal for determining the grade of stainless steel, aluminium and copper alloys based on chemical composition.
The PMI master pro is a versatile piece of testing equipment, with the capacity to test a wide range of metallic materials.

Because the PMI is portable we have the capability to perform analysis both on site and in the laboratory.
Samples can be analysed in our laboratory to determine the composition of materials listed above. Our machine is fitted with a specialist probe for the detection of elements with a low atomic weight, elements such as Carbon, Phosphorous and Sulphur. The analysis of these elements is invaluable in the determination of material weldability and grade.
The PMI is ideal for sorting materials on site. It can also be used for checking materials to a specification in situ, for example, for a maximum carbon content, or for a minimum copper content in weathering steels.
The PMI Master Pro is designed to be portable, allowing testing to be performed on site. The PMI Master Pro can operate for short periods of time on battery power, enabling testing to be performed where a power supply cannot be provided as well as from 110V or 240V power.
