Our Track Record on Thermal Performance

Sandberg provide a range of services relating to the thermal performance of the building envelope. These services are undertaken by Dr Richard Harris, who is a BFRC-certified analyst with 12 years experience of U-value calculation and condensation risk prediction for facade and roofing systems ranging form traditional masonry construction to advanced and unusual modern building systems.

Dr Harris has worked on a number of research projects relating to thermal performance of the building envelope and is the author of a number of CWCT publications on the subject:

  • Guide to the design of thermally improved glazing frames, 1995
  • Standard for specifying and assessing for heat transfer (the U-value), 1ST Edition, February 1997
  • Standard for specifying and assessing for condensation risk, 1ST Edition, February 1997
  • Guide to good practice for assessing heat transfer and condensation risk for a curtain wall, 1ST Edition, February 1997
  • Guide to good practice for assessing glazing frame U-values, 1ST Edition, February 1997
  • The use of advanced glazings, 1997
  • The effect of edge details on heat transfer through insulated panels, 1999<

Dr Harris has also published a number of conference papers and articles on thermal performance, including:

  • Assessing the thermal performance of curtain walling, presented at International Conference on Building Envelope Systems and Technology, ICBEST 94, Singapore, 7-8 December 1994
  • Thermal bridging in curtain walling, presented at Window Innovations ‘95, Toronto, 5-6 June 1995
  • The influence of frame design on the thermal performance of advanced glazing, presented at Using Advanced Glazings to Improve Daylighting and Thermal Performance in Buildings, Conference C69 of the Solar Energy Society, Oxford, 8 May 1997
  • Verifying the thermal performance of facades, presented at ‘The Whole Life Performance of Facades’, Bath, 18-19 April 2001
