ISO 3834 - Sandberg Services
ISO 3834 describes the requirements for a factory control system aimed specifically at fabricators and compliance with it is a mandatory requirement in a number of standards.
EN 1090-2 calls on all parts of ISO 3834 dependent on the Execution Class being worked to. The latest edition of the National Structural Steelwork Specification requires fabricators to work in accordance with ISO 3834, part 3.
For structural steelwork there is rarely a specified requirement to have the ISO 3834 system independently assessed but there are a number of benefits. The standard satisfies a significant element of the EN 1090 requirement for CE Marking and under ISO 9606-1 enables holders to revalidate their own welder qualifications. There are at least two UKAS (or equivalent) accredited bodies in the UK offering an assessment service, TWI Certification Ltd. (http://www.iso3834.org), and TUV UK Ltd. (http://www.tuv-uk.com/uk/certification/iso-3834-640.htm). We would recommend caution if involving other bodies as they may not carry a recognised accreditation to deliver the service.
Sandberg can provide a comprehensive ISO 3834 service including
- Conducting an ISO 3834 ‘gap analysis’ to identify areas of deficiency
- Guidance on working in accordance with ISO 3834 including assistance with the setting up of a compliant system
- Provision of a ‘Responsible Welding Coordinator’ function to provide technical welding engineering
- Preparation for registration of the system
The Sandberg team includes Welding Engineers, registered ISO 3834 auditors / assessors and other personnel specifically trained by TWI in the implementation of ISO 3834. Sandberg maintains close links with TWI and has been at the forefront of developments surrounding ISO 3834 and the associated issues. Sandberg is therefore well placed to assist you with the implementation of the ISO 3834.
